Netflix has announced that it is working with top video game developers to build games based on some of its most popular movies and TV shows.
The first Netflix show to be given the video game treatment will be Stranger Things, with Stranger Things 3: The Game launching on July 4, to coincide with the release of the new season of the TV show.
The adventure game, developed by BonusXP, combines a distinctively retro art style – with characters from the show rendered as 16-bit pixel art animations – with modern gameplay mechanics.
Players can team up with a friend in local co-op to explore the world of Hawkins, solve puzzles, and battle the Mind Flayer as one of twelve characters from the show.
The game will be available on Nintendo Switch , Xbox One and PlayStation 4. There will also be PC, Mac and mobile versions.
Later in the year, Netflix is planning to bring out a game adapted from the highly anticipated Netflix Original series, The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance.
This turn-based tactics game, developed by BonusXP and En Masse Entertainment, will challenge fans to recruit an army of characters and creatures from across the vast fantasy world of Thra and strategically command them in more than 80 campaign battles.
The game will be available on Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, PC and Mac.
Then, in 2020, Netflix will bring out a mobile game based on the Stranger Things universe.
This location-based RPG/puzzle game will allow players to explore The Upside Down hidden around them in their daily travels, and work together with other players to overcome its emerging evils.
Beyond standalone video games, Netflix will also be extending the characters and worlds from its original series and films into existing games from partners like Roblox, Ubisoft, and Behaviour Interactive later this year.
Some fans may have already have spotted the “Scoops Ahoy” easter egg in Fortnite a few weeks ago, when Season 9 launched.
Netflix added that its primary focus remains TV shows and movies, but that its new video game offerings will drive fandom and giving customers new ways to engage with its original series and films.
