Samsung’s component division has secured a very large contract from Qualcomm, guaranteeing that they’ll be the manufacturer responsible for actually building the Snapdragon 865 processors for next-gen smartphones.
Samsung managed to snag this order ahead of TSMC, who was responsible for manufacturing the Snapdragon 855 chip.
Production is expected to begin at the end of 2019, and the 865 will be manufactured using Samsung’s 7nm EUV process. This is a more effective process for making these mobile processors, which is what allowed Samsung to snag the order this year. Samsung didn’t actually have a 7nm process ready last year, while TSMC did.
It’ll be a bit before the 865 is official and in production for smartphones, but at least now we know where it’ll be coming from.
