Black holes are regions of spacetime that form when massive stars collapse at the end of their life cycles and can continue to grow by absorbing stars and merging with other black holes. Astronomers have different classes for these space phenomenons, with the largest, until recently, being dubbed supermassive black holes. However, thanks to a discovery in August, researchers are now using a new term – ultramassive black holes – to describe masses weighing between 10 and 40 billion times the Sun.

The object was discovered by astronomer Kianusch Mehrgan and her colleagues from the Max Planck Institute for Extraterrestrial Physics and University Observatory Munich.

Science channel Riddle explained on YouTube how the breakthrough was made.

The presenter said:  “In the Holmberg 15A galaxy, located at a distance of 700 million light-years away, there’s an object that our Sun, in comparison, would look like no more than a small speck of dust.

“At first glance, it seems that what we see in this image is nothing special, but in the very centre of this galaxy is a black hole whose mass is 40 billion times greater than the mass of our Sun.

“It all started in the summer in the northern part of Chile at the Paranal space observatory, after a team of astronomers using the Multi-Unit Spectroscopic Explorer on the largest telescope in the world watched the movement of stars in the Holberg 15A galaxy.

“Scientists discovered that all the stars revolve around the monstrously huge object and through complex calculations, they learned this object is a supermassive black hole.

“According to these indicators, the black hole turned out to be 310 billion times the size of the Sun and the event horizon exceeds the orbits of all the planets of our Solar System combined.”

The presenter went on to reveal the black hole is now the biggest known to scientists.

He added: “According to scientists, such a mass is near the limit a black hole and before exploring the Homburg 15A galaxy, TIO 618 was considered the largest black hole.

“But the Homburg 15A black hole has turned out to be the record holder.

“Scientists suggest it arose as a result of the merging of two early-type galaxies, both of which had depleted nuclei, this type of merger is very rare and gives birth to a giant monster [black hole].

“Researchers can’t rule out that there were more than two galaxies and perhaps the supermassive black holes in the centre were formed as a result.

“It may seem to us that it has nothing to do with Earth, however, it is likely that the black hole could tell us a lot about our future.”

The presenter then claimed the black hole could affect the Blue Planet in billions of years to come.

He continued: “Such a merger of galaxies could affect the Milky Way in the future.

“But in 4.5 billion years our galaxy will collide with Andromeda, an inevitable event.

“Space objects differ in their glow, depending on their motion relative to the Earth.

“Objects that move away have squeezed light that shifts towards the red colour, approaching objects to emit blue squeezed light.

“However, thanks to the observation of the peer galaxy NGC6052 – which was formed as a result of the collision of two other galaxies – by the Hubble telescope, researchers made a prediction about the Milky Way.

However, he warned there is a much more likely scenario for the end of the world.

He concluded: “No matter how powerful the collision is, the Sun and other stars, as well as planets, will survive because there’s a huge distance between them.

“Most likely not a single person remain on Earth by that time since the Sun will begin to turn into a red giant before this collision even takes place.

“Gas, dust and new stars will completely remake the night sky that we see now.

“If by this time humanity still survives, it will be near new stars, but their explosions may bring an end to the existence of our civilisation.”
