- The phone is gigantically hefty with premium features and a wow factor.
Product Name:Vivo Y17
We have generally seen Vivo introducing affordable and budget segment smartphones in the Indian market but now slowly and steadily the smartphone maker is entering the premium and mid-premium range category with polished and well-built devices and more importantly priced very competitively. Previously, Vivo was majorly focusing on phones that were priced above Rs. 20,000; though, the company has switched its focus to sub-Rs. 20,000 phones and an excellent example is the Vivo Y17 which tries to pack in everything that a consumer may like to have in a phone at that price.
A very good thing that one can see on the Vivo Y17 is that the company is focusing on specifics of the phone like the battery, software, biometrics and others that enhance user experience. Vivo Y17 is one such phone where the company has thankfully not just tried to manufacture a product with premium-like features but has also implemented it well, which was possibly the biggest challenge.
On paper, the Vivo Y17 wins half the race with a decent spec sheet but is it enough? At Rs. 17,990 for the 4GB RAM and 128GB storage model, the Vivo Y17 dangerously gets close to the popular Xiaomi Redmi Note 7 series. Let’s find out below with what we liked and disliked about the Vivo’s newest Y series smartphone.
What we liked about Vivo Y17
There is no denying the fact how exquisite Vivo phones look, same is the case with the Vivo Y17. It looks bright, heftily big and gives a premium body feel that one cannot overlook. It has a gradient finish polycarbonate body with the traditional AI three cameras gracing the back panel alongside a rear-mounted fingerprint scanner and an LED Flash.
At the front, there is a waterdrop-notch display design with a 6.35-inch HD+ IPS screen and a 2.5D curved glass which is a decently tall body. The aspect ratio on the Vivo Y17 is 19:9. There are tiny bezels on the phone which paves the way for 81.91 per cent screen-to-body ratio. We wouldn’t say that the phone looks exceptionally good and but there is nothing to hate about it also. It looks just fine with the ergonomics, and the experience it gave was on par with its price.
Talking about the contents of the retail box, it comes with a transparent back cover, a charger and an Apple-like-earphones along with standard documentation and SIM ejector tool. Vivo has tried every gimmick to attract customers in this price segment.
From its design to its specifications, the phone packs nothing less and nothing more. Speaking of which, the Vivo Y17 has a facial unlock system and a rear-mounted fingerprint scanner that did not fail to impress us at all. It is a wow factor in the phone.
Both the biometrics works at high speed and gets unlocked in a jiffy. We thought the facial unlock system would disappoint us in dim lights, but it surprised us even in a pitch dark room.
The more we used the phone, the more unexpected results it gave us. Thanks to the combination of MediaTek Helio P35 processor, IMG PowerVR GE8320 GPU and a 4GB of RAM with 128GB of storage, the Vivo Y17 gave us a lag-free performance. We tried using multiple apps, video editing apps and playing games, and the phone amazed us with impressive results. We were not left scratching our heads due to slow and laggy performance; instead, all the tasks were handled briskly. Launching different apps simultaneously also gave us satisfactory results.
In the entire spec sheet, battery garnered all the limelight after its swift face unlocks system and fingerprint sensor.
We applaud the decision of fitting in a battery unit as beefy as a 5000mAh with Dual-Engine Fast Charging (9V/2A) technology. We were not hunting for the charger until full two days came to an end with light usage while with heavy usage, its battery could survive for good 12-14 hours.
The speakers and the earphones it comes with were fine. The UI and inbuilt apps are satisfactory, but the idea of giving a native screen recording feature is commendable. Except for Honor, OnePlus, and Asus, there is hardly any Android phone manufacturer that offers such in-built feature on their device.

Further, the Vivo Y17 also stands by Vivo’s selfie-centric phone formula. The selfie camera which carries a 20-megapixel lens with f/2.0 aperture is admirable. We were satisfied with the images that were produced in a fully lit place with little dissatisfaction in low-lighting. There were less-distortion and more clarity in the selfie we took.
The company has also provided a few interesting camera features at the back. There is a normal AI beautification mode, a Panorama mode which enables you to shoot a wide-angle shot, and a fun video feature as well that lets you add music and filters to the video you have taken.
The camera app provides a list of tracks and a host of filter tools such as shaking, illusion, white flash, neon, blur, etc. You can make fun videos and edit them in the app itself.
On the other hand, the back camera which comprises of an AI-powered triple rear camera module gets a 13-megapixel camera with f/2.2 aperture, an 8-megapixel lens with f/2.2 aperture and lastly a 2-megapixel sensor with f/2.4 aperture and LED flash. The pictures we took with the rear cameras gave natural and aesthetic appeal. Even by zooming in the photos, the pixels retained the brightness and clarity.
There were less-distortion and noise in the images that impressed us. However, pictures taken in low-light lacked the lucidity. Indoor pictures came out well, whereas the photos in broad daylight gave adequate and acceptable results.

What’s bad in the Vivo Y17
One of the biggest shortcomings of Vivo Y17 is its heavyweight. When we first held the phone in our hands, we could feel the heaviness. You will not be able to use the phone single-handedly for a long time. Talking about our own experience with the phone, the tall display and hulky body made it challenging to operate with one hand. However, with the time you might get into the habit of carrying such a big phone, but initially, you will surely feel as if you are holding a brick. Perhaps the heaviness of the Vivo Y17 is felt because of the large battery capacity. But, whatever the case may be, had the phone been a little thinner, the phone would have scored full marks in ergonomics and comfort.
Overall, if we were to describe the Vivo Y17 in a line, we would say, the phone is gigantically hefty with premium features and a wow factor. It is probably one of those devices that no would expect to pull any trick, but Vivo Y17 impresses with its performance credentials.
